Snickers For Life

Hello lovely readers, how are you? I hope you are having a wonderful week!
Because I love snacking but do not want put anything crappy into my body (most of the time), I’ve decided to make a couple of delicious protein / nut bars to store in the fridge for hard times. This is a much more realistic approach to staying healthy than saying “I’m never indulging again!”
Because what’s life without a little fun? It’s not fun.
There is nothing wrong with indulging, as long as you do it in moderation and if what you eat is all good.
There are a lot of protein bars and flap jacks out there in the shops, but if you have a look at the ingredients, half of the stuff is emulsifiers. Just think of it this way.. Imagine the kinds of ‘magic stuff’ they need to put into these bars to be able to store them on a shelf for weeks without it getting mouldy.. sugars, preservatives, enhancers.. Never mind the (sometimes) hefty price tag.
So to save a penny and to eliminate the crap, you can make loads of snacky stuff at home.
I’m pretty sure you have most of these ingredients in your cupboard already, and you don’t have to break the bank to make a really tasty bar!
You can store the left over ingredients for future baking & making or put it in a breakfast smoothie!
I have experimented with a couple bellow to prove that you don’t have to stick to a sugar filled Snickers bar to get your fix.

Hemp Protein Snack:

I wanted to make something flashy and blogger-ey, something worth to take the camera out for but of coarse it didn’t go to plan. Instead of rectangular bars, they turned into squishy balls and yes, they look like poo!
They do taste gorgeous despite the appearance (I swear), but I’m still raging the bar looks more like a turd than a cool Pinterest hipster snack.

To make 8 balls:

1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
1/4 cup hemp hearts (shelled hemp seeds)
1/4 cup protein powder (whatever flavour)
2 tbsp chia seeds
4 tbsp Milled Flaxseed
20 fresh medjool dates, pitted. If you don’t have these fancy dates, just soak normal dates into hot water for a while to get it nice and soft!
6 tbsp coconut oil, room temperature
4 tbsp cacao powder
1 tsp vanilla extract

Blend or mix everything together until nearly smooth andΒ roll the dough into small balls the size of bonbons. You can roll them into any sort of powder or milled nut afterwards, to make it look super pretty and dusted! Place the balls into the fridge to harden a littlebit, and they are ready to eat!
If you would like to have your mixture a little more sturdy (not turdy! ha ha..) and hard, add 5-6 tbs of rolled oats at the very end – this will set the mixture if you like something a bit more crunchy!
These little guys are extremely nutritious for you and also taste like a posh dark chocolate dessert. Yum!

 

Protein Snickers:

1/2 cup of whey protein powder
1/2 cup of ground almonds
1/4 cup of almond or coconut milk

-Mix these 3 ingredients together to create the base layer of the Snickers!

-Blend 3-4 pitted medjool / normal dates (soaked, again) and put it on top of the protein base. This will be your sweet caramel layer.

-Sprinkle with chopped nuts of your taste, I used cashew nuts because they are my fave.

-Roll bars into melted dark chocolate (I used 85%) and place in the fridge for a few hours for the chocolate to harden.
Package and get set for a mouthwatering experience without feeling guilty. Β These chocolates are best enjoyed after a workout or for breakfast to get their full effect on your body and mind πŸ™‚
